Connexion Magazine: The Student Design Collective

After 10 grueling weeks of stress, sleepless nights and hard work, Connexion Magazine is complete. The branding aspect of the magazine took me 4 weeks to complete and the magazine itself came together in 5 weeks. Stress levels peaked in the last week, as I received the last bit of content only 12 hrs before delivering the files to the printer. None-the-less the final product turned out bigger and better than I planned on. I was aiming for 30 pages and I ended up with 36 (if you count the cover, otherwise its 32.) At one point I didn’t think it would even be printed, but this just goes to show what a lot of hard work can do.

If you want a closer look at Connexion, you can view the complete Summer Issue here: connexion_summerissue(pdf)

This project wouldn’t be where it is now if it wasn’t for all the help I got from everyone.

The New Urban Planet

For my term 4 branding project I rebranded Urban Planet. The old brand was plain and boring, which is completely opposite to their merchandise and target market. This new look is much more fitting.

Fun Advertising

This was a quick in class exercise in term 4 Creative Direction. We were given an image and a topic and we had to create an advertisement for it. I can’t take credit completely for this. Anne Geiger-Mann had the idea and I just rolled with it and this is what I came up with.

Everyone Wants to See Their Name in Print

This was my term 4 print design project. We had to design the cover for Print Magazine’s student design annual issue. We had to follow the rules and restrictions provided by the magazine and the top 5 designs in the class get entered into the contest. We had to design a cover that featured a global problem that could be solved with design. I know what you are thinking…what global issue can really be solved with design. I thought the same thing. I struggled for quite a while on this. Then about 2 days before it was due, this idea just came to me. Just a couple days ago I recieved word that my design is going to be entered into the contest. Someone recently told me, “In the technological world we currently live in, I still believe people want to see their name in print.” Cross your fingers and we’ll see if mine is one of those names.

Cart Blanche = 10 Weeks of Hard Work

Its been quite a while since I posted anything here, but I have a good excuse; my graduation project. For this project I was given cart blanche for the topic and format and 10 weeks to do it in. Now normally I like a challenge, but this was different, there were no restrictions aside from time, making the decision process that much harder. The final design idea came in the middle of the night only 10 hours before I had to pitch it the first time. Since then it has stayed pretty much the same. Curious about what this project entails?

This project came from my own curiosity. I noticed that design students typically go through their courses in a “bubble.” They get help from classmates, staff, and mentors, but very rarely do they go any further than that. Students are frequently reminded that networking is important, yet there are very few opportunities outside of local design events and award shows to do so. There needs to be a way to burst these bubbles and bring everyone together. This is where my grad project comes into play.

Connexion Magazine will bring together the design students from the various design schools in the lower mainland. This is the stepping stone to creating a student design community in which everyone can benefit from. Here students will gain insights into what students and professionals are doing, learn valuable tips and tricks connect with other students, build networks, and so much more. Since this magazine is for design students there is no reason to leave them out of the creation of it. They can submit their work to be profiled, design the cover, or even write an article. Students will contribute every step of the way in the creation of each quarterly issue of the magazine. The end result of this project is a printed copy of the magazine, comprised of at least 30 pages.

This is the beast that has kept me from the blog. I currently have 3 design students assisting with content (one from Kwantlen College, one from Emily Carr, and one from the Art Institute). While they focus their efforts on content, I have the design to worry about. And let me tell you designing a 30+ page magazine is not as simple as I once thought. Right now, its the end of week 4, and I finally have something I can show off. Its a mock up of the cover of the magazine. I spent 80 hrs of work to reach this point and I have another 200+ hrs to go until its complete. I will be sure to share my progress of this when or if I find a moment of free time.
